Playing with tulle in a way I had never expected was a revelation. To me, tulle had always been a fabric for making clothes, not something to create art with.
We layered it over words to obscure them and dipped it into hot wax to watch the patterns emerge as the wax flowed through the fibres. Such simple experiments completely changed the way I thought about the material. Instead of seeing tulle as merely a building block for garments or something to hang at a window, I began to see it as a creative medium in its own right.
It is so easy to become trapped in the mindset of, “This is what this item is used for,” and never look beyond its intended purpose. I suppose that, in the end, what an arts university excels at is not just teaching techniques, but opening your mind to new possibilities and new ways of seeing. It teaches you to question assumptions, to experiment, and ultimately to look at the world differently.
